Favorite Austin’s Hidden Gem – Johnson’s Backyard Garden

In this world full of chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones in our food supplies, keeping your food and drink as pure and clean as possible becomes a very important part of maintaining health. In Austin, we are fortunate to have numerous farmers markets and grocery stores striving to provide organic food with less carbon footprint. And one of the hidden gems that offer quality vegetables is Johnson’s Backyard Garden (JBG).

I first heard of JBG back in 2008 from a patient who is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) member. At that time, I was looking for a good source of organic fruits and vegetables with reasonable price (In my opinion, Whole Foods does provide great organic food items but the price tags are just way too high.) So I was ecstatic to learn about this CSA farm and jumped right into subscribing as a CSA member myself.

JBG had a very humble start and just as the name suggests, it started out as a small organic garden in Brent Johnson’s backyard in 2004. Now in 2014, it has expanded to over 70 acres and has reached out to many major cities in Texas. Not only does JBG strive to provide great produce to the Texans, but it also founded a nonprofit organization, Farmshare Austin, to provide education and training to aspiring farmers and advocate sustainable farming.

JBG offers many different options to its customers. You can choose to have your produce delivered to your house (with a small delivery charge) or to pick up at most farmers markets. I recommend picking up at the farmers markets because you can exchange the produce in your box with other produce they offer at the booth and it’s also great to purchase from other local farmers and businesses to support the local community. You can choose either weekly delivery/pick-up or every other week. Starting just recently, you can also choose among individual, small, medium and large boxes based on your family size and consumption. JBG is very considerate to accommodate a wide variety of needs.

If you care about the food that you put in your mouth and want to support a more sustainable way of farming, give JBG a try and I’m pretty sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
